Lotus Lake Black 2024

£24.95£27.95

One of the rarest teas in the world in terms of quantity produced, real lotus tea is made by only a few families on Hanoi’s famed West Lake. It takes an amazing 1500 large pink lotus flowers and incredible dexterity to scent just 1kg of old tree Shan Tuyet black tea.

This tea has a phenomenal and unique aroma derived from the stamens of the lotus flower, which is simultaneously reminiscent of vanilla, aniseed and sarsaparilla. The base material is excellent quality and brings out a sweeter, fruitier taste than its more traditional green counterpart. Sweet, spicy and complex – this for us is the high point of Asian scented teas.

Description

The Dong family have farmed kumquat trees and lotus flowers on and around the West Lake for generations. This idyllic natural sanctuary from the city has recently become the most sought after place to live in Hanoi so property prices have risen greatly making the family very rich but they still follow their traditional way of life for now. However the younger generation is unlikely to follow the older family members in making this incredibly rare tea of which we estimate just a couple of hundred kilos is made a each year by the few remaining families that live and farm around the lake.
