Yakushima Rose

£5.95£8.95

A sweet fragrant refreshing blend of rosebuds from the Atlas mountains and a green tea from Yakushima island with roasted brown rice. Think Turkish delight dipped into a cup of good Japanese green tea.

Yakushima is an island off the south coast of Kagoshima whose outstanding natural beauty is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Mr. Watanabe and two other friends started the tea estate over 15 years ago to make the most of Yakushima’s unusual location and pristine environment – free from mass farming and pesticide use – and have been farming ecologically on their small farm ever since. The rosebuds are grown in the Valley of the Roses in Morocco’s High Atlas Mounains. The Soffi Cooperative hand pick and hand process their rosebuds and use no artificial fertilisers or pesticides on their plants.

We recommend brewing this tea with 3-4g per 150ml of water and water cooled to around 85°C.

Over a decade ago three former school friends decided to start a small natural tea farm on the island they grew up on. They all wanted to maintain their connection with the island they had grown up on but often left to find work. They also wanted to protect the environment so they safeguarded the existing forest on the land and chose to farm tea without pesticides or artificial fertilizers. Today one of the three, Mr Watanabe, runs the farm and its small store which serves great green tea ice cream.

The region of Kalaat M’Gouna in the province of Ouarzaate in Morocco is very famous for its production of roses used for perfumes and rose water. The local production is celebrated in an important festival each May. Mohammed Soffi overlooks the Soffi Cooperative which is one of the pioneers in the region for rose production and organic farming. They produce and distribute dried rosebuds and petals, but set aside half their crop for the production of rose oil and rose water.
